Newton Correctional Facility Overview
Newton Correctional Facility, often shortened to NCF, is operated by the Iowa Department of Corrections. It is physically located in Jasper County, but it is not operated by the Jasper County Sheriff's Office and should not be described as a county jail. Local arrests begin at the county jail. State-prison custody begins after sentencing and DOC placement. That distinction changes the lookup tool, the visit rules, the record fields, the mail process, and the public contact path.
The official DOC facility page lists NCF in Newton with medium security, Warden Adam Yetmar, and a site that includes a medium-security facility plus a minimum-security component known as the Correctional Release Center. The CRC houses lower-secure incarcerated individuals and prepares people for parole, work release, or discharge. DOC describes NCF as about five miles south of Newton on a large tract in Palo Alto Township. The state facility page, DOC Offender Search, and DOC Daily Statistics are the key public channels for NCF information.
People can move from Jasper County Jail to Iowa DOC custody only after the criminal process reaches a sentence or other state-custody order. A person arrested last night in Newton will not be found at NCF just because the prison is in the same county. Start with the county jail for fresh bookings. Use DOC Offender Search when the person is serving an Iowa sentence, appears under state supervision, or has a DOC offender number.
Newton Correctional Facility Population
The DOC facility page lists Newton Correctional Facility capacity as approximately 1,050. Iowa DOC Daily Statistics provide a more detailed operational snapshot. On June 12, 2026, the daily statistics showed Newton-Medium with a capacity of 762 and a current count of 953. The Minimum component showed a capacity of 252 and a current count of 348. Those daily-statistics figures are stronger for current population than county jail data because DOC publishes statewide institutional counts and capacities.
| DOC Unit | Current Count | Capacity | Medical or Segregation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Newton-Medium | 953 | 762 | 197 |
| Minimum | 348 | 252 | 6 |
| Iowa DOC institutions statewide | 8,937 | 6,990 | 1,013 |
DOC statewide institutional population on the same date was listed at 8,937 against capacity of 6,990, or 27.85 percent overcrowded. These figures should be read as a dated DOC snapshot, not a permanent count. The Iowa DOC daily-statistics page can change as admissions, transfers, releases, segregation counts, and medical placements change.
Newton Correctional Facility Lookup
NCF inmate records are searched through Iowa DOC Offender Search. The county sheriff app is not the correct tool for a person already in state prison custody. DOC search supports name fields, offender number, sex, location, offense, county of commitment, and name-search modes. To narrow the search to this prison, choose Newton Correctional Facility in the location field. To connect a prison sentence back to a Jasper County case, use the county-of-commitment filter or Iowa court records when a case number is known.
- Open Iowa DOC Offender Search and choose name search or offender-number search.
- Use the Location field to select Newton Correctional Facility when the person is believed to be housed at NCF.
- Review the profile for current location, offense, DOC number, commitment date, TDD or SDD, board-decision fields, and charges table.
- If the person was just arrested in Jasper County, switch back to the county jail app or jail phone because new bookings are not NCF records.
Custody Tip: NCF lookup is for sentenced Iowa DOC custody, not pretrial Jasper County Jail booking records.
Newton Correctional Facility Contact
The official prison contact is the DOC facility, not the sheriff's office. Use the NCF phone for prison facility questions, visitor scheduling issues that DOC routes to the prison, and prison-specific mail or program questions. Use the Jasper County Jail only when the person is locally booked, waiting for bond or first appearance, serving a county sentence, or held before transfer.

Newton Correctional Facility Visits
Newton Correctional Facility visitation follows Iowa DOC prison rules. All visitors age 13 and older need an Ameelio Connect account after DOC approval. Ameelio is available on iPhones, iPads, and Android devices. DOC source material says Ameelio is not available on computers or laptops. Approved attorneys may contact the prison directly for manual in-person scheduling through the contact listed by DOC, Lorna Marter, at 641-841-7027 from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.
| Facility Area | In-Person Hours | Video Hours | Scheduling |
|---|---|---|---|
| Newton Correctional Facility | Saturday and Sunday, 8:00-10:00 a.m.; 10:45 a.m.-12:45 p.m.; 1:30-3:30 p.m. | Sunday 8:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m.; Monday and Friday 8:00 a.m.-8:00 p.m.; Saturday 8:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. | Ameelio app only |

Visitors are subject to search. DOC lists possible search methods including pat down, metal detectors, electronic ion scanners, other electronic devices, or visual searches. Refusing a required search means denial of entrance. These are prison-entry rules, not county jail HomeWAV rules, and they apply because NCF is a state DOC facility.
Newton Correctional Facility Mail
Available source material provides NCF address and visitation detail, but it does not provide a separate NCF money-deposit vendor table or facility-specific prison mail rule set beyond DOC facility contact material. Use the official DOC facility page and DOC channels before sending funds, packages, printed material, or any item that may be treated as contraband. Do not use Jasper County Jail's Access Corrections kiosk rules for NCF. Those county jail deposit rules apply to the sheriff's jail, not to a person in DOC prison custody.

Mail and deposit mistakes often happen when families confuse the two Newton facilities. Jasper County Jail is at the Law Center and uses county jail phone, visitation, and deposit vendors. Newton Correctional Facility is a DOC prison at a separate address. A sentenced person may have a DOC offender number and prison location, while a county inmate may have a recent booking, bond, and local court date.
Newton Correctional Facility Intake
NCF does not book people directly after a traffic stop, warrant arrest, or local police arrest. New local arrests belong to Jasper County Jail. NCF receives people through Iowa DOC custody after sentencing, classification, transfer, and placement decisions. The DOC profile is therefore sentence-oriented. It may show offender number, sex, age, current location, offense, tentative discharge or supervision discharge date, commitment date, recall date, parole-board decision fields, victim-notification link, and charges table.
- DOC
- Iowa Department of Corrections, the state prison and supervision system.
- County jail
- Local sheriff detention for recent arrests, pretrial custody, bond, and short county sentences.
- State prison
- DOC custody for people sentenced or placed into the state corrections system.
- TDD or SDD
- DOC tentative discharge date or supervision discharge date shown on some offender profiles.
Movement from jail to prison is not instant. A Jasper County arrest can lead to booking, first appearance, prosecutor review, filed charges, hearings, plea or trial, sentencing, and later DOC transfer if prison custody is ordered. During local custody, check the sheriff app or jail phone. After state placement, check DOC Offender Search and the NCF facility page.
Newton Correctional Facility Programs
The DOC facility page lists Adult Basic Education, HiSET, Special Education, and the Sex Offender Treatment Program at NCF. The SOTP description says treatment uses group therapy and individual counseling as appropriate. Its stated purpose is to help incarcerated individuals accept responsibility, recognize behavior patterns, institute change, and manage deviant thoughts, attitudes, and behavior. These program details are tied to prison custody and do not apply to the county jail.
The Correctional Release Center is a key part of the Newton facility. It houses lower-secure residents and focuses on release preparation and cognitive behavioral programming. DOC says the CRC prepares people for parole, work release, or discharge. That is different from Jasper County Jail work release, which is a sheriff-controlled county jail program for some sentenced county inmates with court authorization and fixed job rules. Both use the words "work release," but they belong to different systems.
| Program or Component | NCF Detail |
|---|---|
| Adult Basic Education | Listed by DOC for NCF |
| HiSET | High school equivalency program listed by DOC |
| Special Education | Education support listed by DOC |
| Sex Offender Treatment Program | Group therapy and individual counseling as appropriate |
| Correctional Release Center | Release preparation and cognitive behavioral programming |
Newton Prison vs County Jail
Jasper County has two major custody locations in Newton, so the right record source depends on custody stage. The Jasper County Jail handles local booking, bond, county jail visits, ICSolutions phone setup, Access Corrections deposits, HomeWAV visits, work release, and school release. Newton Correctional Facility handles Iowa DOC prison custody, Ameelio visitation, DOC offender records, prison programs, and release-preparation custody. Mixing these systems can send a visitor to the wrong building or cause a searcher to use the wrong locator.
| Question | Jasper County Jail | Newton Correctional Facility |
|---|---|---|
| Who runs it? | Jasper County Sheriff's Office | Iowa Department of Corrections |
| Who is held? | Recent arrests, pretrial detainees, county sentences, holds | Sentenced Iowa DOC incarcerated individuals |
| Lookup tool | Sheriff app and jail phone | Iowa DOC Offender Search |
| Visits | HomeWAV remote visitation | Ameelio after DOC approval |
| Primary issue | Booking, bond, local court, county release | Sentence, DOC location, programs, parole or discharge preparation |
For federal or immigration custody, neither Newton facility is the default public search. Use the BOP locator for sentenced federal inmates, the U.S. Marshals Service district channel for many federal pretrial questions, and ICE ODLS for immigration detention when the person is in ICE custody or covered by the ODLS rules.
Note: Confirm NCF housing, visitation approval, and schedule status through DOC channels before traveling to the prison.
